Dechlorination

Microbial reductive dechlorination (also known as, organohalide respiration) is the primary method for remediation of aquifers contaminated with hazardous chlorinated solvents. The organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) conserve energy from the organohalide respiration process that uses chlorinated solvents as terminal electron acceptors and molecular hydrogen or low-molecular-weight compounds as electron donors. 

Methanogenesis 

The methanogenic archaea (methanogens) are a group of strict anaerobes that use a limited number of substrates, such as H2/CO2 (hydrogenotrophic methanogens), acetate (acetotrophic methanogens), and methyl group-containing compounds (methylotrophic methanogens)

Nitrogen removal

The deammonification process combining partial nitritation (PN) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been considered as a viable option for energy-efficient wastewater treatment
